Simon Provencher, OPEQ Technician, is Passionate about Technology

My career journey
I’ve been fascinated by gemstones ever since I was young, so naturally I pursued a career in jewelry making and earned a Professional Studies Diploma. While I enjoyed the creative outlet, I eventually felt the urge to explore other possibilities. That’s when I had the chance to work on the “Connected Families” project at OPEQ-Ordinateurs pour les écoles du Québec, a government initiative providing technology access to low-income families. Drawing on my self-taught computer skills, I was able to make a meaningful contribution. I’m thrilled to now be a permanent member of the OPEQ team.

What I love about my job
I love sharing my knowledge about refurbishing computers, whether I’m working with new trainees or experienced colleagues. I believe in a collaborative approach where we can all learn and grow together. My time at OPEQ, where I helped to recycle thousands of computers, showed me that IT is where I truly belong.

Job opportunities
The technology sector offers numerous job opportunities for both experienced professionals and beginners. OPEQ workshops welcome interns for short or long-term internships as well as volunteers. They democratize access to technology by allowing people to acquire sought-after digital skills and develop transferable skills for many fields.
