Vancouver Convention Centre and Virtually May 25 – 28 Competition days May 26 and 27

Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) is happy to be heading back to Vancouver in 2022 for the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC), which will be hosted partly in person for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic. This year, the post-secondary and the Team Canada Selection Category Competitions will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on May 26 and 27. These two categories include more than 300 competitors from all regions of Canada who will participate in over 35 skilled trade and technology competitions. The secondary competition will be held virtually. This category includes more than 200 competitors from all regions from across the country who will compete in 45 skilled trade and technology competitions.

New this year, check out SCC’s YouTube channel to see the event livestream! Watch opening and closing ceremonies, onsite competitors from different skill areas, highlights from the virtual competition, interviews, and more!

The winners in all the Skill Areas and categories will be announced at the Closing Ceremony.

This event is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. By providing a forum where young Canadians can compete at the national level, SCNC provides hands-on work experience related to skilled trade and technology careers.

Onsite Post-Secondary Competition The competitions for post-secondary competitors will be held onsite, on May 26 and 27, from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm.

Virtual Secondary Competition The competitions for secondary students will be held virtually, and will be highlighted onsite at the venue and through the livestream. The start times will depend on the Skill Area and time zones. Look at the specific Skill Area documents for details under the competition documents tab. These documents will be posted by April 15th.

Onsite WorldSkills Team Canada Selection Category Competition SCNC Vancouver 2022 represents a qualifying year to compete at WorldSkills Shanghai 2022.

As SCC could not host an in-person event in 2021, the members of WorldSkills Team Canada 2022 will be selected at SCNC 2022 where the WorldSkills Team Canada Selection Event will be hosted. This competition will be held concurrently during SCNC, and competitors may have the opportunity to compete in the Selection Event for the 27 Skill Areas that Canada will participate in during WorldSkills Shanghai 2022. The winner in each of these Skill Areas will be named to WorldSkills Team Canada 2022 and actively train to compete in Shanghai for the title of world champion in their respective Skill Area.

WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition

This year, 61 international skill competitions will take place across Europe, North America, and East Asia from September to November 2022.

WorldSkills is preparing a unique format for international skill competitions in 2022, showcasing 61 skills in 15 different countries and regions around the world. WorldSkills Competition 2022 Special Edition (WSC2022SE) is the official replacement for WorldSkills Shanghai 2022, cancelled in May due to the pandemic.

Thanks to the commitment of Partners and 15 Member countries and regions organizing the individual skill competitions, the dates and cities have been set. The 61 skill competitions will be held over 12 weeks, starting 7 September and ending 26 November 2022.

The Skills Canada National Competition is an ideal way for tomorrow’s workforce to discover new and exciting careers. The Skills Canada National Competition is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. Each year, more than 550 competitors from all regions of Canada come to SCNC to participate in over 40 skilled trade and technology competitions.  

At SCNC, thousands of students visit the competition floor and discover the exciting and rewarding careers that are available in the skilled trades and technologies through interactive Try-A-Trade® and Technology activities, by visiting exhibitor booths, and engaging with industry professionals. This year, Skills/Compétences Canada is bringing three new initiatives to SCNC! 

First, we will be hosting a NEW! Skills Symposium where industry, government and education will have the opportunity to meet, exchange and share knowledge. This year’s theme is: Embracing Adaptability: Navigating Change in the Skilled Trades and Technologies.  Some of the topics that will be presented include engaging diverse communities, recruiting and retention, sustainability and so much more! Second, the NEW! Skills Showcase featuring First Nations, Inuit and Métis Skills. This showcase will allow thousands of visitors to explore First Nations, Inuit, and Métis skills by taking part in activities such as flat stitch beading, soapstone carving, building mini tipis, and constructing Inuit yo-yos! See how these skills align with different competition areas seen at the Skills Canada National Competition, such as fashion technology and carpentry. Learn more.

And lastly, the NEW! Empowering Women in Trades initiative will bring together industry partners to show young women the incredible careers that are available in the skilled trades. Learn more.

Get Ready for WorldSkills Lyon 2024!

The 47th WorldSkills Competition will take place September 10 to 15, 2024, in Lyon, France.

The WorldSkills Competition, held every two years, inspires youth to discover the many interesting careers that are available in the skilled trade and technology sectors. With an increasing demand for skilled workers, the skilled trades and technologies offer a rewarding and lucrative career path for youth around the world. Throughout the Competition, stakeholders from industry, government, and education are provided with the opportunity to exchange information and best practices regarding industry and professional education at networking events and thought-provoking conferences. 

At WorldSkills Lyon 2024, approximately 1,400 competitors from over 70 Member countries and regions will compete in 59 Skill Areas for the prestigious title of world champion in their respective trade. These Skill Areas represent six sectors: Manufacturing and Engineering Technology, Information and Communication Technology, Construction Technology, Transportation and Logistics, Creative Art and Fashion, and Social and Personal Services. The 47th WorldSkills Competition will take place at Eurexpo Lyon, in front of approximately 250,000 spectators.

At the 47th WorldSkills Competition, in Lyon, there will be 28 members of WorldSkills Team Canada 2024 who will compete in 26 Skill Areas, against the best in the world.

The event slogan for WorldSkills Lyon 2024 is: Where there is a skill there is a way.

Here’s a few interesting facts about the host city: 

Lyon is one of France’s oldest cities and is reputed as the gourmet capital of France.   It’s large historic centre, Le Vieux Lyon, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is the largest ensemble of Renaissance buildings in Europe.   It is the hub of an urban area with over two million inhabitants. Lyon is also famed as the capital of the French silk weaving industry and a major textiles centre.   This city is considered a major industrial and business hub with excellent rail and road links and one of France’s busiest airports.  

Skills Canada Alberta Provincial Competition

Every year, the event brings together approximately 700 young people from across the province to compete in 45 trade and technology areas. The competition provides an opportunity for young Albertans studying a skilled trade or technology to be tested against exacting standards and against their peers. Students vie to win the honour of being crowned best in province in their chosen discipline, and for the opportunity to join Team Alberta for the Skills Canada National Competition.

High school students begin their journey with Skills Canada Alberta either with either a Regional or Qualifying Skills Canada Competition, or through in-school selection for skill areas not offered in their region. Post-Secondary students apply to compete, with a reference from their technical institute.
