Skills Canada: A Digital Experience of Skills

SKILLS CANADA: A DIGITAL EXPERIENCE OF SKILLS

Due to Covid-19, Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) made the decision to cancel the annual Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC). SCC held its first ever Digital Experience of Skills; this weeklong cross-country tour included activities that would have been hosted during SCNC 2020. Each of the 13 Skills Canada Member Organizations also promoted some of their fun and interactive programming throughout the week. Through this initiative, SCC continued to inform Canadians about the importance of skilled trade and technology careers with interactive content which was shared on SCC’s social media platforms. For more information, check out the recap booklet.

National Skilled Trade and Technology Week 2020

National Skilled Trade and Technology Week 2020

Skills/Compétences Canada presented a fun, engaging social media campaign for National Skilled Trade and Technology Week 2020 in place of our usual face-to-face events due to  Covid-19 restrictions. Fittingly, the Essential Skills theme for 2020 was Digital Skills. A huge thank you to Vale for being the official sponsor of this year’s campaign.

The campaign featured video contributions from Skills/Compétences Canada stakeholders, partners, alumni, member organizations and a special message from the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion. A special thank you goes out to celebrity supporters Mike Holmes, Mike Holmes Jr, Sherry Holmes and Sebastian Clovis for their participation in the campaign.

Skills/Compétences Canada held a contest for a brand new, sold out X Box Series X on Facebook and Instagram during National Skilled Trade and Technology Week. The contest had many entries and was ultimately won by Skills/Compétences Canada alumni Joshua Faucher.

Did you miss out on our campaign? Not to worry. All of the videos can be found on this YouTube playlist.

Vancouver Convention Centre and Virtually May 25 – 28 Competition days May 26 and 27

Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) is happy to be heading back to Vancouver in 2022 for the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC), which will be hosted partly in person for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic. This year, the post-secondary and the Team Canada Selection Category Competitions will be held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on May 26 and 27. These two categories include more than 300 competitors from all regions of Canada who will participate in over 35 skilled trade and technology competitions. The secondary competition will be held virtually. This category includes more than 200 competitors from all regions from across the country who will compete in 45 skilled trade and technology competitions.

New this year, check out SCC’s YouTube channel to see the event livestream! Watch opening and closing ceremonies, onsite competitors from different skill areas, highlights from the virtual competition, interviews, and more!

The winners in all the Skill Areas and categories will be announced at the Closing Ceremony.

This event is the only national, multi-trade and technology competition for students and apprentices in the country. By providing a forum where young Canadians can compete at the national level, SCNC provides hands-on work experience related to skilled trade and technology careers.

Onsite Post-Secondary Competition The competitions for post-secondary competitors will be held onsite, on May 26 and 27, from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm.

Virtual Secondary Competition The competitions for secondary students will be held virtually, and will be highlighted onsite at the venue and through the livestream. The start times will depend on the Skill Area and time zones. Look at the specific Skill Area documents for details under the competition documents tab. These documents will be posted by April 15th.

Onsite WorldSkills Team Canada Selection Category Competition SCNC Vancouver 2022 represents a qualifying year to compete at WorldSkills Shanghai 2022.

As SCC could not host an in-person event in 2021, the members of WorldSkills Team Canada 2022 will be selected at SCNC 2022 where the WorldSkills Team Canada Selection Event will be hosted. This competition will be held concurrently during SCNC, and competitors may have the opportunity to compete in the Selection Event for the 27 Skill Areas that Canada will participate in during WorldSkills Shanghai 2022. The winner in each of these Skill Areas will be named to WorldSkills Team Canada 2022 and actively train to compete in Shanghai for the title of world champion in their respective Skill Area.
