Jacob Denis from Cummins Speaks about the Automotive Industry

My career journey
I did my Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS) in diesel mechanics. Then I worked for 10 years doing mechanical maintenance on a fleet of over 10 trucks. Now I am working as a mechanical technician for Cummins since the last two years.

What I love about my job
I love working on complex tasks, having new challenges, and being able to surpass myself and learn something new every day. Seeing the final result and knowing that I’ve done a good job give me a lot of satisfaction. I have always loved working with my hands. Furthermore, I am passionate about engines and big trucks. So it was a natural choice for me to pursue a career in this industry.

Skills for Success
I think that all nine Skills for Success are essential. However, in my area, I would say that communication, problem solving and reading are the most important skills. These are the ones I use most often in my work.

Career opportunities
There are many options in the automotive industry. As the saying goes: the sky is the limit! In this field, you can pursue a career as a data-reading specialist, mechanic, salesperson, trainer, mechanical technician, and much more. My advice to young people who want to pursue a career in this industry would be to show interest and ask questions. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, to try new things, and to dare.
