Tyler Cherkowski - 20

Biography  

In high school, I excelled in my welding, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing courses. My instructors pushed me to pursue a career in the trades, stressing the benefits which include: no debt, learning on the job, and rewarding work. I love the variety in my trade. I get to replace mechanical components, then use diagnostic skills on electrical problems. I also love the physics and science aspects of the job. I’m going to get my Red Seal certification in refrigeration and would like to eventually move into industrial refrigeration. I want to become the best service technician that I can. 

In high school, my teachers really pushed me to try the skills competitions. I was ecstatic when I learned I’d be competing at WorldSkills Lyon 2024. I never thought that going into this job I’d compete in France and represent WorldSkills Team Canada 2024. What a once-in-a-lifetime experience! 

Interesting fact 
I really enjoy going to the gym with my friends.  

Skills for Success 
The skill that’s been most instrumental for me in training and during the competitions has been problem solving. At the Skills Canada National Competition, I had new electrical controls which I’ve used at work maybe once. Using my knowledge, I figured out what I needed to make my project.
