Annual program helps High School Students and Educators in Ontario and Alberta improve curriculum, facilities and surrounding communities

OTTAWA, ONTARIO – November 29, 2012 – Skills/Compétences Canada, a national not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades, today announced that Lowe’s, the second-largest home improvement retailer in the world, will be renewing its Toolbox for Education Grant Program for 2013. This will be the third year that Lowe’s, in partnership with Skills/competences Canada offers the program, benefiting students and educators in Ontario and Alberta.

“Lowe’s is a proud supporter of skilled trades education and is excited to fund the Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grant Program for the third year in a row,’ says Alan Huggins, president, Lowe’s Canada. “Each year we receive outstanding applications and it’s truly an inspiration to see the innovation behind the projects being completed in our schools. Lowe’s is honored to help build essential life skills in the next generation through funding that further enables students and teachers to improve their curriculum, facilities and surrounding communities.”

The Lowe’s funding program is aimed at engaging students and teachers looking to improve their school campus, curriculum delivery or surrounding community. The contribution supports High School based projects currently in place in the provinces of Alberta and Ontario, and will expand to other regions as Lowe’s establishes retail locations in other communities. Some of the projects completed over the years include School Landscaping Project and Rotating Student Art Exhibits. For a list of the Ontario and Alberta high schools participating in the 2013 program click here.

“Our mission is to encourage and support a coordinated Canadian approach to promoting skilled trades and technologies to youth,” says Shaun Thorson, Chief Executive Officer, Skills/Compétences Canada. “Skilled trades are the foundation of industries that drive the Canadian economy. With industry partners like Lowe’s, we can continue to help inspire and encourage youth to pursue career paths in skilled trades and technology while ensuring industry has the pipeline of skilled labour workers that they need for the future.”

Lowe’s has also recently announced a new fundraising project, which will support an even greater number of schools and communities while continuing to support organizations and causes that reflect Lowe’s community relations mandate. This new program allows anyone to easily set up a fundraiser by selling $50 Lowe’s gift cards to their friends and family. For each card sold, $20 will go towards their school’s building or community project.

CAPP joins industry leaders in supporting skills development programs to address growing skilled labor shortages

OTTAWA, Nov. 13, 2012 /CNW/ - Skills/Compétences Canada, a not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technologies, today announced the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) has signed on as a Presenting Sponsor of the 2013 Skills Canada National Competition.

The annual Competition tests the best and brightest skilled trade students against exacting industry standards configured by a National Technical Committee comprised of skilled trade and technology experts from industry and education. From June 5 - 8, 2013, Canada’s best skilled trade and technology students, along with industry, government and educators, will gather in Vancouver where more than 500 students are expected to participate. The event will feature at least 40 skilled trade competitions ranging from carpentry and mobile robotics to welding, aircraft maintenance and fashion design.

With $61 billion in capital investment by the oil and gas industry forecasted for 2012 and significant production growth expected over the next decade, one of industry’s fundamental challenges is a lack of skilled workers.

“Our member companies are facing new and emerging challenges resulting from the growing shortage of skilled workers,” said Travis Davies, Spokesperson for CAPP. “We need to work with other industry leaders and organizations such as Skills Canada to attract more young Canadians into the skilled trades and provide more employment-based training opportunities. Supporting the 2013 Skills Canada National Competition is an important event to help bring this critical issue to the forefront.”

The Canadian oil and gas industry currently supports about 550,000 direct and indirect jobs across Canada. These jobs encompass both professionals and skilled trades of all types – electricians, pipefitters, mechanics, welders, technicians and specialists, just to name a few. Employment in Canada as a result of new oil sands investments is expected to grow from 75,000 jobs in 2010 to 905,000 jobs in 2035, including about 126,000 jobs sourced in provinces other than Alberta. Those numbers include all types of jobs, but many of them are skilled trades positions.

“Industry and labour groups have become more proactive than ever in raising awareness of the many job opportunities available in the skilled trades. Organizations like CAPP have discovered the value in engaging with industry associations, educators and government to generate interest and gain the inside track on finding the brightest and the best skilled tradespersons,” says Shaun Thorson, CEO of Skills/Compétences Canada. “Events such as our National Competition play a pivotal role in bringing talent and industry leaders together.”

Industries that depend on skilled trade workers are key drivers of the Canadian economy and contribute over 50% of Canada’s GDP – or over $550 billion, according to Statistics Canada.

The Skills Canada National Competition provides an opportunity for students to be tested not only against industry standards, but also against their peers from across the nation in their chosen discipline. The event attracts school groups and young career-seekers who can take part in interactive Try-a-Trade® and Technology activities, as well as employers and recruiters, industry associations, labour groups, training institutes and government partners.

New Survey Shows Majority of Canadians (83%) feel Skilled Tradespeople are Important to their Everyday Lives

OTTAWA, Ontario – November 6, 2012 – Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC), a national not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technology, today hosted the official launch of National Skilled Trades and Technology Week 2012 at an event held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, in Gatineau, QC. The week-long event, which includes interactive student skills activities across the country hosted by Skills/Compétences Canada and its Member Organizations, highlights the shortage of skilled trade and technology workers and the tremendous career opportunities this presents for youth.

The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, spoke at the event emphasizing the Government’s commitment to the skilled trades:

“It is more important than ever that youth gain the skills and experience needed to prepare for and succeed in the jobs of tomorrow. Through grants, tax credits, and support for training programs, our Government is encouraging apprenticeships and careers in the skilled trades and technology sectors.”

The theme of National Skilled Trades and Technology Week 2012 is focused on the history and importance of skilled trades in Canada, highlighting the important role of skilled tradespeople in building and shaping our country.

“Our country’s infrastructure was built by tradespeople and their importance is often overlooked as they are the enablers of many of the things we take for granted such as our reliance on electricity, communications networks, running water and transportation,” said Shaun Thorson, CEO, Skills/Compétences Canada. “Industries that depend on the skilled trades have become increasingly vital to Canada’s future economic stability and to its standing in the global marketplace. National Skilled Trades and Technology Week helps raise awareness of the career opportunities in the skilled trades, while recognizing industry needs and encouraging students to develop trade and technology skills.”

Industries that depend on the skilled trades have become increasingly vital to Canada’s future economic stability and to its standing in the global marketplace. According to the Conference Board of Canada, a shortage of more than one million skilled workers is forecasted by 2020, with an estimated 40% of all new jobs in the skilled trades and technology industries.

Skilled Tradespeople: An Everyday Resource Canadians Can’t Manage Without

A new survey which was released today by Skills/Compétences Canada, conducted by Harris/Decima, illustrates the importance and extent to which Canadians rely on the skilled trades for some of their everyday activities. From ensuring that they have running water, that their car runs, that they can turn on the lights, and that they have a leak-free roof over their head, there are hundreds of skilled trade professions in Canada that touch on numerous sectors of the economy.

Almost all Canadians (98%) surveyed admit they have used a skilled tradesperson at least once in the last few months:

72% say they have taken their vehicle in for maintenance or repair

91% have gone out to eat at a restaurant

69% have been to a hair salon, spa or barber

The survey was conducted by Harris/Decima via teleVox, the company’s telephone omnibus, from November 2nd to 4th, 2012. A total of 1,003 Canadians were surveyed. Results are considered accurate +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.

OTTAWA, Oct. 19, 2012 /CNW/ - Skills/Compétences Canada today announced that Canada’s best skilled trade and technology students, representing all provinces and territories, along with industry experts, trainers and educators, will gather in Vancouver from June 5 - 8, 2013 for the Skills Canada National Competition. More than 500 students are expected to participate in the event, which will feature at least 40 skilled trade competitions ranging from carpentry and mobile robotics to welding, aircraft maintenance and fashion design.

The annual Competition brings together Canada’s best and brightest skilled trade students, where they are tested against exacting industry standards configured by a National Technical Committee comprised of skilled trade and technology experts from industry and education.

“We are pleased to announce today that the 2013 Skills Canada National Competition will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia”, said Donavon Elliott, President of Skills/Compétences Canada. ”This annual event is one of the major initiatives that we organize to raise awareness of the tremendous opportunities for young people who choose career paths in skilled trades and technology. With ongoing support from the Government of Canada, industry leaders and educators, the Skills Canada National Competition is the only event of its kind for these young people to showcase their talent while competing for prestigious awards that can propel their career forward.”

In addition to the Competition, the event offers an opportunity for 10,000 visiting students and young career-seekers to take part in interactive Try-A-Trade® and Technology Demonstrations. Activities cover a broad range of skills from designing a home using the latest architectural software to the culinary art of carving vegetables.

“In British Columbia, it is estimated that there will be one million job openings by 2020 with 43% requiring specialized skills training”, said Amber Papou, Executive Director of Skills Canada British Columbia. “Considering that many skilled trade workers will be retiring within the next 20 years, a more alarming statistic indicates that only one quarter of young people aged 13 to 24 plan to consider a career in the skilled trades. Hosting the 2013 Skills Canada National Competition will provide thousands of BC youth with the opportunity to explore a multitude of skilled trade and technology career possibilities that they may never have considered otherwise.”

The Skills Canada National Competition brings together industry, educators and other stakeholders to provide young people, such as Caitlin Mayo, former provincial, national and WorldSkills competitor, and the current owner of Sugar Patisserie in Surrey BC, with the resources that they need to move toward a career in the skilled trades/technologies:

“Training for a skills competition is one of the best ways a student can master their skill,” says Caitlin Mayo. “In my experience, participating in the skills competitions gave me invaluable experience while allowing me to learn new elements of my craft that I use in my business today.”

OTTAWA, Ontario — August 1, 2012 – Skills/Compétences Canada, a not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technologies, today announced that it will be leading a delegation of youth, representing skilled trade and technology students and apprentices, to participate in the APEC Youth Skills Camp in China. The purpose of the event is to promote vocational skills training and generate awareness for the importance of skilled trades to economies around the world.

Canada is a founding member of APEC, and its team for the Youth Skills Camp was chosen to represent competitors and past champions from WorldSkills and Skills Canada National Competitions (SCNC), and includes:

Michael Christensen, Medallion of Excellence Winner in mechanical engineering design – CAD, WorldSkills London 2011

Haley Lonsdale, 5th place winner in the skills category of Restaurant Service, SCNC 2010

Hilary Pelerine, gold medal winner in hairstyling, SCNC 2011

Adrian Schut, Medallion of Excellence winner in mobile robotics, WorldSkills London 2011

The APEC Youth Skills Camp runs from August 9-19, 2012 with visits to Beijing, Nanjing, Wuxi, and Shanghai. The Canadian group will join 100 students from other APEC economies including the United States, Mexico, China, Russia and Japan. The Camp will include a Youth Forum, field visits to vocational colleges, enterprises and public training facilities, skills demonstration among participants and cultural tours.

“Today’s youth are tomorrow’s workforce, so by investing in them we are helping contribute to Canada’s long-term growth, competitiveness and overall prosperity,” said the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development. “Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government is helping Canadian youth develop the skills and gain the experience they need to compete globally, now and in the future.”

“This conference is a great opportunity for some of Canada’s brightest skilled trade students and apprentices to network with their peers from other APEC economies. This will not only provide them with an invaluable experience, but they will gain insights into the role and importance of the skilled labour market on the global economy”, said Natalee Lewis, Project Manager, Skills/Compétences Canada.

Industries that depend on skilled trade workers are key drivers of the Canadian economy and contribute over 50% of Canada’s GDP – or over $550 billion according to Statistics Canada.

OTTAWA, July 11, 2012 /CNW/ - Skills/Compétences Canada, a not-for-profit organization that actively promotes careers in skilled trades and technologies, today announced that the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry (UA Canada) has signed on as a Presenting Sponsor of the next three Skills Canada National Competitions. UA Canada is a multi-craft union whose members are engaged in the fabrication, installation and servicing of piping systems.

“Now more than ever, the push is on for industry and labour groups to be more proactive in raising awareness for youth of the many job opportunities available in the skilled trades. Organizations like the UA who sponsor skilled trade events, have discovered the value in engaging with industry associations and educational institutions to generate interest in the field, and gain the inside track on finding the brightest and the best skilled tradespersons,” says Shaun Thorson, CEO of Skills/Compétences Canada. “As Skills/Compétences Canada prepares to host the Skills Canada National Competition in Vancouver next year, it welcomes the generous support of UA Canada as Presenting Sponsor and this valued three-year partnership will enable us to promote the value of trades and apprenticeship.”

Industries that depend on skilled trade workers are key drivers of the Canadian economy and contribute over 50% of Canada’s GDP – or over $550 billion according to Statistics Canada. It also reports that 24 per cent of Canadian employers are unable to find the right skilled trades talent.

“Events such as our National Competition play such an important role in bringing talent and industry together,” Thorson notes.

The UA was a Premier Sponsor of the 2012 Skills Canada National Competition, held May 13-16 in Edmonton. Under the new partnership agreement announced today, UA will be a multi-year Presenting Sponsor of the national skills competitions, beginning with the 2013 Skills Canada National Competition which will take place June 5-8, 2013 in Vancouver, B.C. The event brings more than 500 competitors representing over 40 trades from all provinces and territories to compete in Canada’s only national, multi-trade and technology event of its kind for young skilled trade and technology students and apprentices.

“This Competition is a great opportunity for us to educate our youth and showcase theconstruction industry, and also give these young people information on what the trades are all about,” says Larry Slaney, UA Canada. “We also look forward to being part of ensuring that everyone involved understands the importance of Apprenticeship for the future of Canada.”
